What makes these patterns so interesting is that even if they are very complex, they are created using very simple rules.
The video bellow shows Forest 01 evolving for 12,000 iterations. The cellular automaton (sometimes called an “ant”) that generates this pattern is a LRR (left, right, right) ant with the addition that instead of painting each square a solid colour, I use a pattern that has a black stripe (and is rotated based on the direction the ant “looks” at each step).
